Welcome to debbiefink&co., and to Jewish Involvement Theatre (JIT), done debbie-style: Scroll down, down, down to soar up, up, up!
debbiefink&co. emerged a few years ago, amidst Debbie Fink’s work (both secular and Jewish) as a writer and ‘edu-tainer’ (educator and performer). She has performed and conducted workshops for well over 50,000 students, educators, parents, and adults on an impressive array of topics (for more information, visit www.harmonyhearth.com). The core of all her work is character education. In the past few years, Fink’s print- and performance-work have been reaching a global audience, including Europe, mainland Japan and Okinawa, Canada, and Israel. In fact, Debbie has had the great honor and privilege of ‘edu-taining’ our troops’ families as a USO Tour Veteran.
Deeply committed to her Jewish roots, culture, and people, Debbie currently devotes 18% of her time and creativity to Jewish Involvement Theatre (JIT). Debbie sculpts JIT productions – meaningful, powerful, humorous, interactive, multi-character, one-woman shows – that reach, teach, and touch their participants’ minds and neshamot (souls).
Debbie’s remaining time and energy are currently devoted to three Public Health Initiatives:
* Mom of Many Hats Book & Project (www.momofmanyhats.com) (soon in Spanish)
*The Little CHAMPs: Child Heroes Attached to Military Personnel (www.operationchamps.org)
* Operation Thanksgiving Eagle (www.operationthanksgivingeagle.com).
To read about these projects, visit Jewish Women International (JWI)’s article on Debbie, selected as one of JWI’s Jewish HERoes: http://www.jwi.org/Page.aspx?pid=3199.
Debbie’s spin on JIT is that it’s like the “little black dress” of Jewish theatre: JIT’s pedagogic paradigm works anywhere, and can take on any topic and make it real, meaningful, joyful, and thought-provoking for all who participate. The productions get to the heart of the matter, and participants leave with much more than they came.
JIT’s Basic Pedagogic Formula:
1. Opening - 2-4 minutes (movement / sign language)
2. First Character’s Monologue (5-10 minutes)
Followed by a facilitated discussion
3. Second Character’s Monologue (5-10 minutes)
Followed by a facilitated discussion
4. Third Character’s Monologue (5-10 minutes)
Followed by a facilitated discussion
5. Fourth Character’s Discussion (5-10 minutes)
Followed by a facilitated discussion
6. Group Interview of one Character (Participants vote on one character to bring back to interview)
7. Closing - 3-5 minutes (movement / participants learn sign language)
debbiefink&co. recently performed in Toronto, Canada for a national conference (the Canadian Council for Conservative Synagogues) – fortunately, only one passport was required! Her co. has performed at the national JEA Conference in Washington, D.C. (2010).
Debbie receives commissions to create innovative performances for synagogues, schools, and Jewish organizations, addressing any number of topics, including:
1. Queen Vashti: Taking the First Public Stand Against Domestic Violence;
2a. RiverSpeak: Stories of Heroism Told from the Banks of the Nile, Danube, and Potomac Rivers;
2b. RiverSpeak: An Interactive Seder Told from the Banks of the Nile, Danube, and Severn Rivers;
3. The Growing Tree: Nurturing Our Children’s Jewish Roots and Limbs;
4. Breaking Through the Glass: Joining our Children on Their Jewish Journey;
5. Im Ein Ani Li, Mi Li? Taking Care of Me, 2010 (for 6th graders);
6. I’m Sorry. I’m Sorry. I’m Sorry. Slicha. (A High Holiday performance);
7. Israel Through the Decades Honors (Commissioned scriptwriter and Director)
8. Hoedown Horas!
Below are a series of photo montages from debbiefink&co.’s performances for you to enjoy. Her company now comprises 34 personalities and characters! In addition, debbiefink&co. was commissioned in 2011 to script and direct a community-wide, multimedia event – with a cast of 70+ congregants – for Israel (Beth El Honors Israel Decade by Decade). The photo montages below are references for the various performances.
(Note: performances conducted on Shabbat or Yomim Tovim have no photos or photo montages to document the uplifting and meaningful experience . . . )
Enjoy! While ‘a picture’s worth a thousand words,’ there’s no substitute for the actual, real-live experience!
